Progressing Cable Transport Development in Cambodia

As an exclusive agent of Doppelmayr in Cambodia since 2023, Confluences has supported them in exploring cable transport and ropeway solutions to boost the Kingdom’s infrastructure and tourism. Kampot's tourist spot, Bokor Mountain, is among our key opportunities. Together with Sokimex Investment Group, Confluences and Doppelmayr are progressing a study of potential large-scale ropeway systems to improve accessibility and the mountain tourism experience.

Learning from Austria’s Mountain Tourism Success

Confluences toured Doppelmayr’s systems, including the Komperdellbahn gondola lift in Serfaus, led by David METZGER, International Sales Manager at Doppelmayr, who is leading the development efforts for Cambodia.

As part of this ongoing collaboration, from June 23 – 25, 2026, Confluences has visited Doppelmayr’s headquarters and production facilities in Wolfurt, Austria. The mission included meetings with the Group’s top management, including Alexander KLIMMER, Executive Director Sales, as well as visits to several Austrian mountain destinations using Doppelmayr ropeway systems.

From Fiss and Serfaus to Sölden and Innsbruck, the visit offered a concrete view of how Austria has successfully developed mountain tourism around both natural assets and carefully designed infrastructure. These destinations show that ropeway systems are not only a means of transport. They can become the backbone of a wider tourism ecosystem.

Confluences team experienced the Fisser Flieger hang glider in Fiss, Austria, a prime example of successfully integrating mobility system with mountain tourism for better tourist experience.

Around the ropeways, mountain destinations can develop a wide range of activities. Some are naturally linked to the mountain environment, such as hiking, climbing, trail running, road biking, mountain biking, nature walks, and viewpoints.

Others require dedicated development and investment but can significantly increase the attractiveness of a destination for families and leisure visitors: zipline, sky fly, swing coaster, alpine coaster, toboggan, luge, mountain carts, adventure playgrounds, observation platforms, water park areas, themed restaurants, hotels and carefully designed visitor journeys.

Some of these activities are relatively simple in concept. But when they are well designed, well operated and properly integrated into the landscape, they can become strong drivers of visitor experience and repeat visits.

Doppelmayr & INPUT: Transform Ropeway Systems into Experiential Leisure Concept

This is also where the broader Doppelmayr ecosystem brings important value. Through INPUT, part of the Doppelmayr Group and specialized in holistic tourism and experience concepts, the discussion goes beyond the construction of a cable car. It is about imagining how a destination can become stronger, more attractive, and better connected for local and international visitors.

For Cambodia, and for Bokor in particular, this approach is highly relevant.

With its scale, history, strong existing visitor base, and wide range of possible developments, Bokor is very likely the site in Cambodia where a large-scale cable car system makes the most sense for our first project.

The objective is not only to improve transportation.

It is also to understand how ropeway systems can help structure a full destination experience, connecting natural assets, heritage sites, hospitality, leisure, outdoor activities, and family entertainment.

“Bokor has the space and potential to become a more complete mountain and outdoor entertainment destination. A cable car or ropeway system could help structure this development, improve access, create new visitor experiences and support a stronger tourism offer."— Soreasmey KE BIN, CEO of Confluences.

At Confluences, we are proud to continue supporting Doppelmayr in Cambodia and to contribute, together with our partners, to projects that can become game changers for the country’s tourism and infrastructure development.
